American Board Pediatrics Certified

Dr. Kanaya grew up in Monterey and attended Monterey High School. She began her career in pediatrics at the same time that she was raising her two children, Emily (who is now finishing her own pediatric residency in New York) and Sam. She shared a part-time position with another pediatrician who was also a young mother, then changed to full-time once her children were older. After moving around for school and her residency, and living briefly in Colorado, she returned to her hometown.

Why she chose pediatrics:
“My intent was to do internal medicine, but we had a pediatric rotation in our training. It was definitely the most interesting part of medicine and the most fun. There are a lot of interesting diseases that come up in our practice. And it is gratifying to work with kids, whether they’re well or sick.”
How she makes kids feel comfortable:
“Even with babies, I try to make eye contact and bend down to their level – just make sure friends. It takes discipline to talk directly to kids and teens and direct questions to them, especially when they’re not talking and their parents want to give input. It’s important to talk to and hear from the patients themselves.”
The No. 1 thing she wants parents to know:
“Your judgement is correct. Our job is empowering you. There’s a lot of pressure that you feel, but we want to help you feel like you’re able to do the right thing in your individual way.”

Personal interests:
Her children, art history/classical music, sitting on the bench in Hawaii, visiting bakeries in Paris.

Her all-time favorite kids’ book:
